Dear Friends,

Happy Holidays! This past year has been an exciting one for Pro Bono Net. In 2013, we launched several new initiatives to help strengthen gaps in services. These initiatives empower those who serve to make a difference adn those in need to improve their lives.

In 2013, our technology helped increase access to justice nationwide.

  • In New York, Pro Bono Net took a leadership role in mobilizing the New York legal community following Hurricane Sandy. We created femaappeals.org to enable those without an attorney to create well-crafted appeals to FEMA denials. This resource was also used by victims of natural disaster and flooding in Oklahoma.

  • In Charlotte, NC, we are piloting web-enabled remote service models that enable immigration attorneys to help clients in surrounding counties apply for citizenship.

  • On Staten Island, we are enabling self-represented Family Court litigants to obtain help from attorneys in Manhattan who provide advice and counsel via video conference.

  • Nationally, we are helping young immigrants and Dreamers obtain deferred action status with interactive online and mobile tools through a collaboration with leading immigration groups.

Additionally, we took our first foray into the mobile technology world, developing several apps with our partners. Pocket DACA, a mobile app developed by Pro Bono Net and our partners in the Own the Dream Campaign, puts information in the hands of young immigrants. You can read more about Pocket DACA and our other mobile technology in this newsletter.

In the coming year, we will initiate a rebuild of our LawHelp Interactive site as well as developing CitizenshipWorks 2.0, which aims to increase the number of applications for citizenship. We’ll be continuing the development of new mobile innovations. Our remote representation project that we piloted in Staten Island Family Court is expanding to more than six counties in upstate NY in 2014.

I’d like to thank you for being part of our efforts. We are making strides in improving access to justice, and we could not do it without you.

Every contribution you make helps us bridge the growing justice gap. I encourage you to make a gift this holiday season.  You can make a gift online at www.probono.net/donate.

Sincerely,

Mark O’Brien

Executive Director
