Meet our New Staff!

Over the past few months, Pro Bono Net welcomed four new members of our staff: Adam Friedl, Pro Bono Coordinator; Xander Karsten, LawHelp Program Coordinator; Ahuva Shabtai, Project Manager/Business Analyst; and Mirenda Watkins, LawHelp Interactive Coordinator.  Adam, Xander and Mirenda are attorneys who have spent their careers in public service, while Ahuva has a strong background in project management.  We asked them to introduce themselves by answering a few questions about their interests in and outside the office.

Adam Friedl, Pro Bono Coordinator
Based in: New York
Previously worked at: St. John’s University School of Law Public Interest Center
What attracted you to Pro Bono Net?
The chance to work with really smart and caring people on innovative justice projects. Pro Bono Net is on the cutting edge of developing new, replicable ways to increase access to quality legal services and information. I think that the overwhelming disparity between the number of people who need legal counsel and the number that can afford it is the major justice issue facing our society, so I feel fortunate to be a part of such meaningful work.

What are you most excited about working on?
Collaborating with the wide variety of partners, from legal services organizations to court systems to law firms. As part of my previous work in civil legal services, I coordinated a program in the New York City Civil Courts that partnered the state’s Access to Justice program with legal services providers and pro bono attorneys and law students. I learned that cooperation between such diverse, talented groups can create outcomes greater than the sum of the parts, and I’m excited to explore ways that technology can enhance such partnerships.

What is your favorite thing to do outside the office?
Going to the beach. Or watching the Bachelor/Bachelorette. I mean, definitely the beach.
Xander Karsten, LawHelp Program Coordinator
Based in: San Francisco
Previously worked at: Legal Assistance of Western NY (where he was an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow)
What attracted you to Pro Bono Net?
I was interested in the variety of work and the use of evolving technologies in this mission. I am particularly attracted to the capacity building aspect of Pro Bono Net, helping civil legal services agencies serve as many residents as possible. Plus, you can’t beat the location!

What are you most excited about working on?
Having spent eight years working in direct legal services as a paralegal, law student and attorney, I have seen the impact of too little information on self-represented litigants, especially those with limited means and who often face systemic problems. I am deeply committed to making the legal system more understandable and navigable to folks who cannot obtain an attorney, and LawHelp is an amazing platform to address many of these issues.

What is your favorite thing to do outside the office?
I enjoy outdoors activities, hiking and biking in particular. I also enjoy staying in, knitting (or any of the fiber arts) and watching old movies.
Ahuba Shabtai, Project Manager/Business Analyst
Based in: New York
Previously worked at: Shabbat.com
What attracted you to Pro Bono Net?
The great team. I never met so many people working together that are so smart and really passionate about fulfilling their roles working in sync to deliver quality results. In software development a PM/BA is only as good as their team.

What are you most excited about working on?
Some of the exciting projects that I am working on involve integration between different systems. The benefit of such enhancements expand LawHelp Interactive's reach through facilitating processing of legal documentation. I am also looking forward to supporting the community’s technological needs as they evolve.

What is your favorite thing to do outside the office?
Reading, baking/cooking, yoga & hiking are at the top of the list.
Mirenda Watkins, LawHelp Interactive Coordinator
Based in: Champaign, Illinois
Previously worked at: Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT)
What attracted you to Pro Bono Net?
I really believe in the organization’s mission and think that technology has and will increasingly become central to access to justice/social justice movements. I also like working with smart, interesting, and kind people and the folks here are fantastic.

What are you most excited about working on?
It’s hard to narrow down! It’s a really new experience and I am generally excited to learn more about and support various states and partners in the LawHelp Interactive community.

What is your favorite thing to do outside the office?
I love to cook (because I love to eat). I recently was given a jar of saffron from Morocco and I am going to attempt to make Chicken Tagine with it.
